Traditional African masks have various forms and functions. Their use is predominantly ritualistic and religiously important. In most societies, they cover the rites of passage and many times were and in some instances are, still used to regulate society. They serve in the areas of discipline, education, law, healing and divination amongst others. The most mystifying of masks has a message to convey. Whatever their use, the charm and individuality of the mask remains an intriguing subject on the part of collectors.
